As you research our beautiful Boundary County I would urge you to look beyond the cold factual statistics which paint us as being small in land use and pretty limited in per capita income. The awesome beauty of our Boundary County coupled with the truly fine people who live here more than make up for our size. I’ll talk about our beautiful topography, but first, allow me to give you a small insight into the soul of Boundary County …
The governing of our county goes way beyond our three County Commissioners. Boundary County is governed and managed by citizen committee’s giving us true hands on control of our dedication to preserving our way of life. We do not spend thousands of hard earned tax dollars on consultants to tell us how to utilize the resources of our county. You will find us to be friendly, but not very open to ideas on how to change our county from folks who do not live here hence the label of “independent” and “set in their ways” from some people who linger awhile, then move on. These labels are badges of pride symbolizing our way to preserve the fine quality of life we enjoy here in Boundary County. As you wander our back roads, take note of the lack of trash. Yet another indicator of the pride our citizens have in Boundary County and the ownership of their property. When it comes to cleanliness, we’ll put our county up against any county in the United States.
“How’s the weather/” … first question asked by all visitors. We enjoy four distinct seasons with fall being both the longest, and most beautiful to witness. January, February, and March … hide in your cabin or go ice fishing. We are surrounded by three mountain ranges which form a cul-de-sac in the northeast portion of our county. This confluence of mountain ranges serves to stabilize our weather patterns and as an added bonus, gives us prized year round flying weather. Given this fact, our county airport is currently undergoing major runway/taxiway expansion as FAA recognizes the value of having our airport as a back-up for air traffic in inclement weather further south. Our river bottom land rivals the richness found in the Mississippi delta. The Kootenai River enters Boundary County from Montana and returns to Canada at our northern border. We are blessed with fishing that meets the needs of cane pole and worms to high end Fenwick fly rod fishermen. Species range from the iconic cutthroat trout to blue catfish. Yes, a virtual unlimited resource of fishing available at both high elevation lakes and the lower ones. With the exception of a few high elevation lakes, most fishing spots are easily accessed via the county road network.
